On the southern shore of the Río de la Plata, you find the capital city of Argentina that boasts about 3 million inhabitants known as Porteños while the Greater Buenos Aires conurbation has more than 12.4 million inhabitants. This city enjoys the reputation of being one of the most influential cities in terms of art, trends, and education in South America.
Known as the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan bustling city, yet safe and easy to get around.
Argentines sometimes refer to the city as Capital Federal to differentiate the city from the province of the same name. The people of Buenos Aires are known as porteños (people of the port), acknowledging the historical importance of the port in the development of the city and the nation. People living in the Buenos Aires province, outside the city, are called bonaerenses (something like "people of the fair winds").
For much of the 20th century, Buenos Aires was the cultural capital of the Spanish-speaking world, and many porteños flaunted their riches abroad.
The city has many museums, historical buildings, shopping centres, hotels and there is a floating casino that departs from Puerto Madero neighbourhood (since casinos are illegal in the city, gambling starts when in international waters).
The fantastic night-life, offering a wide variety of options, accommodates any taste. Porteños are known to be friendly and fond of foreigners. Don't be surprised if you get caught in a busy social agenda!
The city enjoys mild weather with an average temperature of 18º C (64º F).
Seasons are well differentiated: July is the coldest month while January holds the record for the highest temperatures.
Buenos Aires is well-equipped with an effective public transportation system (buses and subways) and taxis allowing for one to get around easily.
